چکیده

Abstract. The study evaluates the global glacier inventories available for area viz., RGI, GAMDAM and ICIMOD, with newly generated Kashmir University Glacier Inventory (KUGI) three Himalaya basins; Jhelum, Suru Chenab in north-western Himalaya, comprising of 2096 glaciers spread over an 3300 km2. KUGI was prepared from Landsat data supplemented by Digital Elevation Model, Google Earth images limited field surveys. comprises 154 328 1614 basin, corresponding to 85.9 ± 11.4 km2, 487 ± 16.2 km2 2727 ± 90.2 km2 respectively. investigation revealed that most are http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4461799 (Romshoo et al., 2021).

Climate and Glacier Variability in Western North America

A simple model using once-daily upper-air values in the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis database estimates seasonal mass balance at two glaciers in southern Alaska, one in western Canada, and one in Washington substantially better than any of several seasonally averaged, large-scale climate indices commonly used. Whereas sea level pressure and sea surface temperature in the Pacific exert a strong influenc...

Glacier-specific elevation changes in parts of western Alaska

The meltwater from glaciers in Alaska contributes strongly to global sea-level rise, but accurate determination is challenging as only two comparatively small glaciers have long-term measurements of annual mass balance (Gulkana and Wolverine). Simple upscaling of their values to the entire region is error-prone as their representativeness is unknown and might be biased. Alternatively, differenc...

Remote sensing estimates of glacier mass balances in the Himachal Pradesh (Western Himalaya, India)

Although they correspond to an important fraction of the total area of mountain glaciers (33000 km out of 546000 km), Himalayan glaciers and their mass balance are poorly sampled. For example, between 1977 and 1999, the average area surveyed each year on the field was 6.8 km only. No direct mass balance measurement is available after 1999. To contribute to fill this gap, we use remote sensing d...

Snow and glacier investigations using hyperspectral data in the Himalaya

This article presents highlights of the research work done in hyperspectral remote sensing in the Himalayan cryosphere. Hyperspectral radiometric investigations conducted at different field locations of NW Himalaya and cold laboratory are discussed. Spectral signatures were collected for varying snow grain size, contamination, liquid water content, vegetation/soilmixed snow, glacier ice, morain...

A glacier inventory for the western Nyainqentanglha Range and the Nam Co Basin, Tibet, and glacier changes 1976–2009

The western Nyainqentanglha Range is located in the south-eastern centre of the Tibetan Plateau. Its northwestern slopes drain into Lake Nam Co. The region is of special interest for glacio-climatological research as it is influenced by both the continental climate of Central Asia and the Indian Monsoon system, and situated at the transition zone between temperate and subcontinental glaciers. A...
